!Defeated Philip I of France near Cassel in 1071. Also killed his nephew and captured his sister-in-law in this battle. The victory made him Count of Flanders but destroyed his relationship with his brother-in-law, William I. Thereafter Robert's main interest was in his imperial fiefs and in expansion eastwards. He relied for the protection of Flanders on his feudal lord, the king of France, rather than on William I. The relationship between King Philip I and Robert was confirmed upon the marriage of his stepdaughter, Bertha of Holland, to the king. He gave his eldest daughter in marriage to Cnut II of Denmark. [Timetables of History]
!William I was affronted by the slaying of his steward and friend, William fitzOsbern, who had come to the aid of Arnulf III and Richildis, who Robert had killed or captured at Bavinchove, near Cassel. Thereafter relations between the two were strained even though they were brothers-in-law. Moreover, Robert, whose main interest was in his imperial fiefs and in expansion eastwards, preferred to rely for the protection of Flanders on his feudal lord, the king of France, rather than on his brother-in-law. He lengthened the breach between the two by giving his daughter in marriage to Cnut II of Denmark. [William I and the Norman Conquest]
Used the tactic of feigning flight, then turning to overwhelm his pursuing enemy at the battle of Cassel in 1071. [The Norman Achievement, p. 77]
Robert became Baldwin VI and reigned until his death in 1093. He was succeeded by his son Robert II, who became Baldwin Forester VII. [House of Forrester, p. 5-6]
