He was taken ill while working on the buses and upon his recovery went to work as Clerk in the Boston and Maine Railroad Office at the old Railroad station in Concord, NH for a short period of time before resigning due to ill health. During his tenure with the Concord Street Railway he served in the capacity of Repairman and Assistant Foreman at the repair shops. He also worked as "Motorman" on occasion when they were running specials between Concord and Contoocook River Park with the old "Open Cars." After a recovery period, he went to work for J. C. Penny Company until his retirement on 1 Feb 1958. After the death of his wife in 1963, Chester lived with his daughter Margery (Jewell) Wheeler and her husband, Arthur, in Peterborough, NH.
