- MARRIAGE: To Ethel Charolette Ried in 1913 at Superb, Sask. DEATH: Information from gravestone in Kerrobert cemetary. MISC: Died from influenza epidemic which was spreading through Saskatchewan in 1918. of Kerrobert, Saskatchewan ------- David Dinwall Minchin came to Superb, ( Somme, S.D. ) first in 1908 to see his homestead. He walked from Battleford and back to file on the SE1/4, Sec. 18, Rge. 24, W 3rd. The same section Somme School was later built on in 1929. He returned next year to hire another homesteader to break the first ten acres, while he returned to Prince Albert to work in the Lumber Industry in that area. In 1910 he came to stay on the land. He and his brother Alex Minchin, brought the first well boring outfit and a Stanley Jones threshing outfit into that district. He helped to form the municipality and served on the council for some time. He and my mother, Charlotte Ethel Reid were married in 1913. Three children were born to them. Howard, 1914; Donald, 1915; Marie, 1918. Father passed away Nov. 1918 in a flu epidemic. Dave and Alex Minchin came west from P.E.I. where the family had been since 1800. Mother's family came west from Ontario and my grandfather's near Smith Falls, Ontario. He homesteaded SW1/4 Sec. 16 Rge. 24, W of 3rd. and passed away the winter of 1919 and 1920. Grandma Reid moved her family with her 4 daughters to Tramping Lake, Sask. where they ran a restaurant for many years. Mother remained to farm our old homestead and married Jack Griffin. There were 7 children born to their union. I, Howard, married Mary Schmidt of Unity, Sask. in 1941 and lived at Unity till 1942 then moved to Kelowna till 1944, at Lacombe, Alberta till 1948 and to Sylvan Lake Alberta where we reside now. Donald spent some time at Unity, Sask. He moved to Edmonton in 1938 and on to Vancouver in 1943, where he is to this date. Marie, after finishing school, spent some time at Driver, Sask. and moved to Vancouver and to Surrey, then to Fort Langley B.C.where she lives now. Early Church and social occasions were held in Howiedale School. That was where we were baptized and went to Church, when we were small children. I remember going in the buggy, sitting down between my parents' feet by the dash board, fascinated by the mud flying from the wheels. Father took Mother to dances there when they were courting. My schooling began at Ashford School in 1922. Donald and I went to School there because we were the only children in the district. Mother was paid to drive us to another district after father passed away. Mother worked for a Peter Reid who ran a small ranch on Sec. 9 and 10 in the Buffalo Coulee. As range land he used most of the land that is now government pasture, it was all open land in those days. Farmers wintered their horses there as the prairie wool hay grew thick and heavy then. We rode horse back all over that country as boys. Other children moved into the district in 1923 and 24, so we went to school in a van, homemade and drawn by horses. In 1925 we changed and went to Nichol School until Somme was built in 1929. At that time I only attended in the winter because everyone had to work in the summer, as soon as you were able. School soon finished a the depression came in strong at that time and I left the district in 1933, as did my brother Donald and my sister Marie. My family suffered as many others in the district during the 1920's and 1930's. In 1927 a tornado blew all our farm buildings away. They rebuilt some in 1928 and in 1929. They were burned to the ground with loss of horses and equipment. Coupled with poor crop years and depression. Mother passes away because of deprivation and hard times. We helped all we could but on such meagre wages received in those times, it did not make ends meet. Most people who homesteaded just pulled up stakes and left during that time and are scattered everywhere. In 1922 a big prairie fire swept through the country around our old homestead ( in late fall ) starting 1 mile south or Superb town site. It cleaned off a large area to the southeast, including most of the grass where government pasture is now. It was quite a loss to farmers as they depended on the grass for winter feed for their horses. Mother's quick thinking saved the neighbours buildings. She raced with horse and buggy and us children to the house and put a fie guard around the house and barn. She probably saved some lives at the same time, because there was a family of small children at home alone, watching the fire surround the house from the windows. Mother worked through the night hauling water and food to the fire fighters. About 30 men fought the blaze. My sister Marie and fought a prairie fire in 1928 by ourselves. We put it out after it had burned about a 1/4 section of grass. It took all the afternoon and we were exhausted and singed pretty badly, but we won! by Howard Minchin, published in "Prairie Tapestry - A Superb Story" in 1981.
